Pakistan
is essentially an agricultural based country
which largely depends on its irrigation
system. It is very fortunate to have the
most elaborate and extensive integrated
irrigation network in the world. The
irrigation system was formally launched in
Sindh province with the construction of Sukkur Barrage in 1932, followed by Kotri
Barrage in 1955 and Guddu Barrage in 1962.
In order to bring reforms in Water Sector,
Sindh Irrigation & Drainage Authority (SIDA)
was established through SIDA Act in 1997,
which was modified in 2002 through Sindh
Water Management Ordinance (SWMO-2002). The
main objectives of SIDA, which works under
Irrigation & Power Department as its
Administrative Department, is to provide
waters to farmers in an equitable manner and
become self sustainable by expanding its
financial resources. SIDA can achieve its
objectives through the close coordination
and cooperation of its stakeholders.
